About The Artwork

Humans are constantly changing between the process of learning and unlearning, under a constant flux bringing a sense of instability. We can gravitate between a sense of hope and the uncertainty of leaving something behind. I wanted to work around the idea of loading and unloading, of a container that felt it was carrying a transient weight. A piece that could feel heavy, powerful and at the same time under a fragile balance. We are constantly becoming someone else. I wanted the work to express a sense of adaptability and uncertainty. A clean structure that could withstand the temperature of the kiln without warping. I imagine this bundle having inner conversations writing then in repetitive patterns in order to hold patience, to count time through constantly repetition, counting. This piece is hand built and hand glazed. It was acquired during The Other Art Fair Chicago 2021

Paola Gracida was born in 1979 in Mexico City, she studied Industrial design in Mexico city and made in Master in Fine Arts in Sweden. She currently lives and works in Saint Joseph, Michigan, USA. Her work explores the idea of adaptability and how we exist under continual change. It aims to express a transitory nature by using shapes that are in a fragile balance, an interior or core. Each work is a quest to defy the force of gravity, shapes that are challenging to build in clay. Focused on how the material changes throughout the process imagining how they will overcome these stages against gravity without breaking. Her practice is based on creating pieces with an essence that can be redefined by others, that convey contrast and openness to understand how it would be possible to modify cultural references and show we transcend stereotypes to become only human.
