About The Artwork

This design is inspired by a music rule: the canon. Can music be seen? Can sculpture be heard? There are three main parts in this design: 1. rhythm - the black pyrographed, strong and straight lines; 2. harmony - the subtle carved perforations; 3. melody - the structure above the harmony. There are two different kinds of overlapping following the rule of the canon, the first one being melodic, and the second one being both melodic and rhythmic overlapping. All of the gourd surface is carved. The parts which are glowing red are light transparent thin gourd walls (with different carved depth in the front of the lamp). This carved area is divided with 300 vertical walls with pyrographed top. The perforated parts are carved (using Voronoi diagram) in three different depths and this was the most demanding part making super tiny details. The neck of the lamp is finished with black jewelry string (waxed cotton). The wooden walnut base is a design alteration of the gourd design, so they can well complement each other. The work on the base is certainly not minor to not be mentioned, being an art piece of its own. A lot of delicate carvings and a lot of sanding. Although the lamp can be seen as exquisite wooden sculpture by day, it is quite different when lighted at night. The incorporated light gives life to the carved gourd, making it transparent on the thin-walled carved parts (glowing in the shades of the color red) and projecting its clear beams to the nearest walls through the perforated parts. Inside the lamp there is a halogen light bulb which can be accessed (if replacement is needed) with opening the lamp’s cap holding itself with magnets. Every lamp goes with its own electrical adapter (input:100-240 volts, output: 12 volts). Taking care: the lamp is for indoor use only. The gourd and the wood used for the lamps are dry and stabilized so they will last a long time. However, being thoroughly carved, their structural strength is weakened, so you need to be gentle with them. Keep them dry and don’t use any kind of detergents for cleaning. When you need to remove the dust use bigger paint brush with soft bristles. I find this method to be the most effective. The lamp is packed using the highest safety rules for transporting an art piece. I make custom hard box for every lamp, using 18 mm plywood and the lamp itself is protected with bubble wrap, surrounded by styrofoam cubes so it can stay at the same position in the center of the box while the box is moved. Materials: the head of the lamp is African gourd from Guinea, the base is local walnut. Gourd diameter: 8.6 in / 22 cm. Base diameter: 9 in / 23 cm. Height: 16.1 in / 41 cm. Working time: 7 months. Here's a short YouTube video where you can see some of the stages working on this lamp, but more importantly how it looks in real interior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU6B2fE9n3s&t=1s

I was born in 1981 in Ohrid, Macedonia, where I still live and work. When I work on a gourd you see almost not moving man working on a very small area with his tiny tools, and that picture is quite boring, but in my head it is the most dramatic process. I feel overwhelmed and tired, I’m experiencing pure joy and disappointment, love and anger, all of that in a single day, or just in a few moments. That is very addictive to me. Why so much detailed lamps? Although I would say it is just for the love of it, it’s also a rebellious statement against the instant way of today’s living. We train our attention only on short, quick tasks, and that can easily become shallow and dangerous. One lamp can take half a year of countless risky tasks, not knowing what the final result will be like. As it is a deep technical exploration of the mysterious spherical wood, it is also a deep introspection of personal limits. Making something unique is a very tempting challenge. My previous involvements in art were through music and literature. After you finish a music composition, you record it in a studio, and then it can be heard by everyone who buys it. When you finish a book, it is printed and it can be read by as many people as the number of copies sold. And it is the same book for everyone. It is the same song for everyone. The only difference is the personal impression. Well, the gourd lamp is only one. It cannot be duplicated on so many cd’s, it cannot be printed on so many pages. It’s only one cd. It’s only one book. And even when it is in front of you, you can see almost half of the lamp. There is always ongoing mystery about its appearance. And I just love that!
