An experimental fusion of glass and ceramics. This unique dish was made from a thick slab shaped in a plaster former, then carved to create a pattern of rings with each alternate one being carved deeper to allow for the adding of glass to create this particular kind of effect. After the dish had been bisque fired three coats of various glazes were applied. Glass, whether it be frits, crushed beads and bead, or reclaimed is the added before the second firing (see image). The dish can either be displayed horizontally or, as is usually preferred with these particular dishes, on a plate stand, as shown in one of the images. From start to finish a piece of work of this such as this can take 15+ hours to make what with the preparation of the slab; the carving; first firing; underglazing; glazing; preparation of glass; and the second firing of work. In addition to the time taken to make the bowl, there is also the cost of the clay itself, the glass beads, the expense of the firing process (twice) plus the underglazes and glazes.

I have been a ceramicist for more than 30 years. 99% of my work is made using coils, slabs and pinch pots with the occasional use of extruded forms and aslip casting. The emphasis of my work is scupltural and ornamental rather than utlitarian. I have a particular interest in the fusing and melding of glass to ceramics and this body of work is collected from as far afield as the Middle East and USA.
