This wooden relief has been developed over a long time where i have worked with wood and layering of wood to express my ideas of chaos/control/play. I deconstruct the original wooden furniture to recreate a new something that isn't functional but is communicating something. In this particular work i have already painted the different sections of wood before i assemble the parts together to make a whole. There is a rhythm and a presence of composition which is not rigid but a more open composition. My work has been greatly influenced by my travels particularly to India where the influences of colour/celebration of colour within culture have inspired my ideas. I love to work with high density of colour with an idea all colours go together. Although use colour instinctively where there is a greater understanding and experience of working with colour. I really enjoy the challenge of making something sculptural working from a material that is flat/2d and I enjoy the intensity of the making from sawing by hand/using machines and assembling materials so they speak to one another where the presence of the artist hand is important. The history of the materials is important in the work, stories within the materials themselves where they come from, what they have been used for originally i.e. a table, a chair. These stories all come together but are created into a new form, a celebration of form, colour, parts to a whole.

Clare Iles’ work is a gathering of materials, creating sculptures that balance the outside and inside through research and response, exploring the feeling of being an outsider. At one time more nomadic and outward looking, Clare has worked in extreme environments to challenge values and reflect on the true self. Often working from ‘real’ things; creating sculptures out of found furniture and bringing these objects together and apart again; drawn from exploring childhood memories of playing house with objects to hand, creating a place to be, her own expression and her own rules. The results are tactile, spontaneous and intuitive. Iles’ work is influenced by travel and research and has carried out extensive artist funded travel – Western India 2005 Arts Council East, Jerusalem 2010 Arts Council East, Artist Travels: Greece 1999, Australia 2000, Dominican Republic 2001, Western India 2006, Northern India 2007, Jerusalem 2009 / 2010. Clare Iles has exhibited her work across the UK and Europe from inclusion in an international group exhibition through to several artist residences, projects and solo shows. Clare has taught Fine Art on the BA Degree Course and Art & Design Diplomas at Colchester School of Art and led workshops and projects across all age groups within galleries, schools and housing associations.
