About The Artwork

Does this help with the sadness? Probably not, right? "Commercialized Spirit" is a conceptual art installation that delves into the complex relationship between traditional plant medicine and modern commercialization, particularly focusing on tobacco's evolution from a sacred plant used by First Nations tribes to its commodification by corporations like Philip Morris. At its core, the installation aims to highlight the cultural and spiritual significance of tobacco within Indigenous communities, where it has been revered for its healing properties and ceremonial use for centuries. Through immersive visuals and symbolic elements, viewers are invited to reflect on the deep-rooted traditions and sacred rituals surrounding tobacco as a plant medicine. However, juxtaposed with this reverence is the stark reality of tobacco's commercialization. Philip Morris, among other corporations, developed intricate marketing strategies that transformed tobacco into a highly profitable commodity, particularly in the United States. The installation explores the tactics and models employed by these companies to sell tobacco products successfully, from sophisticated advertising campaigns to addictive formulations. By intertwining these contrasting narratives, "Commercialized Spirit" prompts viewers to contemplate the ethical implications of commodifying sacred plants and the broader impact of commercialization on traditional cultures. It serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the face of relentless commercial pressures, urging us to critically examine the intersection of spirituality, capitalism, and indigenous knowledge in the modern world. This piece is made with a cigarette machine that was removed from a bar in Philadelphia. The machine is fully operable. The packs do not contain cigarettes.

Emotion is the driving force behind the work that I create. My paintings are reflective of the confusion, uncertainty, passion, seriousness, intimacy, and challenges as they manifest a range of emotions and experiences on the way to an expression of self. I view the practice of painting as a search. I use a diverse array of text, imagery and abstract painting elements as a visual communication style. Painting allows me to step beyond the bounds of language and expand consciousness and perhaps address what can only be expressed visually. There is a constant questioning in the work to find the validity or truth to what I am expressing. My paintings articulate the self through an accounting of personal memories, ironic phrases, self-deprecating humor, autobiographical stream of consciousness, pop culture references, ecstatic or drug induced fringe references, and importantly a kind of innate belief in the power of the art form. My studio is a clandestine laboratory where the focus of my work centers on the experimental use of materials and application of medium. My work is often edited over the course of days, weeks, months, and occasional years. Color, depth, and texture play an important role in helping me define the visual field of my work as I define personal emotion through painting. Non-traditional and non-art materials and processes, such as spray painting, photo transfer, collage, etc. are integrated with text and imagery. The finished work of art is found through an open-ended process where end result is somehow both truth and fiction, focusing on an embodiment of contradictory impulses.
