When we come across Pedro Girão's artistic practice, we realize that we are in the presence of an eclectic artist. This can be seen when we see his works of painting, sculpture, drawing or engraving. When looking at his work, we are confronted with a variety of languages and forms, which reveal to us an artistic universe that unfolds between figuration and the abstract, what is organic and geometric, between the rigor of order and the apparent chaos of a dynamic gestualism. But not only. The diversity of materials he uses, oil paint, acrylic, household paint, stainless steel, iron, copper or plaster, reveal in an unshakable and unequivocal way his belief that there is a specific and individual approach, both from a form and technical perspective, for each new topic he decides to address. This principle can be translated into the phrase “The subject calls for the medium”. Each new series of works implies a return to zero point. Nothing is taken for granted. Faced with a new idea, the challenge of finding the “right” formal language that best translates his vision into an image that for now only exists in his mind, is the stimulus that feeds his creative drive. “And God said: 'Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear.” (Genesis 1:1) The work is both a minimalistic and conceptual pair of wall sculptures, that embody that particular moment of creation. It plays on the duality present in every aspect of the world, the need to balance the antagonistic forces present all around. The absolute silence in the moment of creation. Although thought of as a pair, each one works well individually. Color and surface perception may change slightly depending on lighting conditions. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Pedro Girão is a professional artist since 1994. Academic background in drawing at and engraving, particularly in the taille-douce technique. Throughout his teenage years, he was fascinated by the great classical masters, and dedicated himself to decoding and mastering their techniques. This knowledge of the old techniques, both in painting and sculpting, gave him a solid background and added freedom to use whatever materials or mediums in his work. His growing interest in sculpture led him to discover the potential and beauty of metal, which went on to become one of his favourite materials. In painting, he goes on developing his passion for formal composition, in order to achieve new and exciting images. The richness of texture, a careful composition, the choice of the best medium to express the idea.. all together makes Pedro Girão’s creations both honest and strong works of art. In his words: “I believe that for each idea or image there is a specific language that best suits it. I simply try to find it. I always avoid repeating myself visually while approaching different subject maters.”
