About The Artwork

"Copper Tritscheller isn’t necessarily drawn to the same animals that many sculptors like to portray. And Tritscheller’s creatures whether bats or donkeys, don’t always look like themselves because they bear humanlike features and talents. In fact, the sculptor’s signature bronzes push the boundaries between animal and human: burros balance precariously on pedestals and bats with exaggerated wings suggest comic-book superheros. The sculptor relishes working out the structural and aesthetic challenges of amalgamation and morphing the animal and human together in one figure. Although Tritscheller creates a variety of animals, she is often attracted to bats and burros because she feels they are misunderstood. Throughout civilization burros have proven to be smart, loyal and hardworking, carrying loads that weigh more than they do. Her work reflects her affection and love for these animals."

A native of Georgia, I did not originally pursue a career in art. I was formally introduced to the art world when I learned bronze casting in Thailand in 2000, and I've been sculpting ever since. I'm drawn to animals and mostly focus on bats and burros, both misunderstood animals. BATS: Bats are a favorite subject. I'm inspired by their quiet contributions to our lives, their faces, habits and elastic wings. They need our empathy and understanding. Sometimes I sculpt them realistically, other times, people-like. When I combine their traits into human form (anthropomorphic), it helps people identify more with this unusual subject. I find that sculpting delicate, sensitive bats in heavy, permanent bronze is a testament to my commitment to them. The best way I can help to raise awareness about their difficulties is through my work as an artist. BURROS: Burros are considered merely "beasts of burden." Often mis-treated, they do so much for cultures around the world yet the level of abuse towards them is heartbreaking. Both comic and tender, they deserve our respect.
