About The Artwork

I simply refuse to limit myself to ‘single space’ formulaic methods, a few glazes and repetitive shapes! I always strive to create items that effortlessly transition between functionality and aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from the organic beauty of my environment, I create ceramic art that mimics the colours, shapes, and textures found in the region. To create the texture of the five vases, I incorporated gravel and stone collected from my surroundings. With glazing, I try to push the boundaries through innovative glazing techniques. Exploring unconventional methods, such as reactive glazes that produce unexpected patterns or layered glazes and multiple firings, that create depth and complexity. The result is a surface that is unique after each firing. Earthy tones, fluid lines, tones and textures all create a sense of tranquillity and connection to nature. These pieces bring a touch of the Overberg situated on the Southern tip of Africa, into interior spaces.

Bennie Smal Ceramics is the cumulative result of three decades in Creative Arts. After majoring in Graphic Design at Stellenbosch University, Bennie founded a successful Graphic Design Agency servicing premium South African & International Brands. In 2019 Bennie moved from the city to the wide-open spaces of the countryside and opened a ceramic studio on the family farm in the heart of the Overberg. His new domain is an idyllic place to immerse himself in nature, producing contemporary art in mixed media. Using mainly porcelain & stoneware clay, and applying different techniques to create ceramics in his own unique and adventurous way. Each piece is a creative synthesis of functionality & aesthetic beauty and is uniquely crafted from the base elements of earth, fire & water.
