About The Artwork

The creation of this green plate with sgraffito berries and a portrait of a pensive dark-haired fairy was inspired by Japanese woodblock art. Another source of inspiration was traditional folk style art objects. I hope this artwork will remind its viewers of the importance of being fully present and mindful of the world around you. I used terracotta clay for this piece. This type of clay is earthy, and is equally beautiful with glaze and without. I worked with black, white, green and pink underglazes, as well as transparent glaze for creating this piece. The illustration on the artwork was created using sgraffito technique, which means carving the image in the clay while it is still wet.
