About The Artwork

In numerology, the number nine represents the end of a cycle. Nine spears pierce the twisting and writhing form just before it falls, giving rise to the next revolution in the cycle, the next life. This piece was born out of an accident. I was making a cast of my arm in paper pulp from a two part rubber mold that I had used numerous times before. When I removed the halves they were not yet completely dry. I set them aside to try again. As one of the halves dried, it curved and twisted into a wonderful form. It begged to be turned into something. I used many small basswood pieces to create an intricate face on one side that appears to buckle at certain points as the form bends and twists. To heighten the sense of this form writhing in the throws of death, I pierced it with nine basswood spikes.
