About The Artwork

For a module for my university course, I was tasked with “transcribing” a work of art, object, text…Just about anything really. I investigated a number of high security buildings (U.N Headquarters, Pentagon etc.) And looked at deconstructing them. Instead of these tightly shut and regulated establishments, they would then become open to look at up close and around. I settled on transcribing the MI6 Headquarters in London. I first cut up photos of the building and hung the different pieces akin to a mobile. The pieces could also be put together like a jigsaw. In the end, I decided to build a reconstruction of a deconstructed MI6 out of coloured paper and foamboard. It was as close to scale as I could muster…And that’s not easy trying to work out or find dimensions for such a secretive building. I felt as if the Secret Service would burst through my door and take me away for questioning why I was googling information on the building, suspecting me as a terrorist. I think this difficulty finding the required information is really an interesting aspect to look at. It is supposed to look weak, fragile, almost transparent…as if there is nothing to hide…In fact it cannot hide anything if it tried. I got an okay mark in the end. Feedback suggested it was “too within my comfort zone.” In terms of modelling construction I suppose I can agree with that (Though I have never attempted anywhere near this complex before), the fact that I avoid making artwork that can be deemed “political” means this is quite a new area for me. With the state of affairs in the world today, essentially “Blowing up” a high security building like this is going to carry some political weight whether it is intended or not.

I am an artist currently studying for my Masters of fine art at Birmingham City University. My practice as an artist is primarily an investigation into grids, logic and mathematical systems, and by subverting them, how people will react and respond to them...myself included. I achieve this through the mediums of sculpture, video, installation, drawing and writing.
