These are prototype designs that explore alternative ways that a bicycle may be additionally mechanically powered to assist the rider. By definition an e- bike is a bicycle with an integrated electric motor that can be used for propulsion. Although there are a plethora available the majority are limited by the battery life. Inspired by the hovercraft of the 1960's and the fan boats currently used in the Everglades, this air assisted bicycle uses a propeller powered by an electric motor to assist the cyclist while pedaling uphill. A drawback of e-bikes has often been that their range is limited by the life of the battery. In this model the restriction has been overcome by operating the fan by 240v mains electricity, thereby eliminating the need for a battery. Concerns are raised as to it’s safe operation in wet weather, but the rubber tyres may give adequate protection against electrocution. Psychologically, there are benefits. Primarily, it should not be seen as a conventional e-bike but rather as a bicycle powered by a classical element adding a spiritual dimension to the act of cycling. It may also have a beneficial effect as referenced in The Irish blessing but this is conjecture.

My interests and stimuli vary from day to day, as does the method and materials that I choose to use express them. Currently I am working on a series based upon end of life objects that have been sourced from a recycling centre. They are classed as end of life objects because their previous owners chose to treat them as such and throw them away. After completion they are photographed and then either destroyed (by recycling into their base materials) or restored as far as possible to their original state. Only the photograph is a permanent record of the sculpture. These will available as limited edition signed prints soon.
