Ελπις 
(Elpis) Sculpture

The work is made up of seven scaffolding planks each 2.5 metres tall. These weathered structural materials have been repurposed, except in this instance the structure they are holding up is my writing and words. 
 This carving takes inspiration from the original texts on the myth of Pandora by Hesiod and other Greek poets and scholars. I see this work as a contemporary fresco with the intonaco being replaced by my own words and writing carved and painted into the wood. Layered upon this is an eclectic mix of painting inspired by the surrealist automatic painting movement. The painting was done with brushes I made myself from found materials. The paint itself pushes the words back into the wood in a ritualistic healing process.

 The gouged out, emotive writing sealed with a gritty, residue of clay and paint mixed together as if by painting over the words they are being sealed like a wound. My emotive response and empathetic link to the myth are my reinterpretation of the tale for a contemporary audience.
