About The Artwork

Embrace, 2023 Nani’s sari, artist’s sari, thread, wire, snap button 17 x 26 inches The text on the hand and forearm reads "held" and "back" as the artist reflects on how comfort and control coexist in patriarchal domestic relationships. These arms loosely reference the figure of the grandmother in the collage titled "Homecoming" from 2023. This work was exhibited at the group show Full & Fragmented Affections curated by Dennissa Young at Yes Project Space, Zhou B Art Center, Chicago IL in 2024.

Reevah Agarwaal is a multi-disciplinary artist from New Delhi, India, currently based in Chicago, IL. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2021 and is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Fine Art from the same institution. Through textiles and print media, her work explores girlhood, cycles of trauma, and the complex dualities that exist in domestic relationships. Using repurposed found textiles that have a personal history, she creates quilts and collages that reference her childhood, relationships, and the domestic spaces she has lived in. By employing material history, intuition, and memory, she aims to reconstruct and reclaim narratives of women and girls. Her work has appeared in various group shows in Chicago, including at Co-Prosperity Sphere, Purple Window Gallery, Color Club, South Asia Institute, FLXST Contemporary, Free Range, and The Martin. She also has permanent public artwork on view in South Chicago which was funded by Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG) and South Chicago Parents and Friends. Recently she co-curated a group show at FLXST Contemporary centering practices by Asian and Asian American Femme artists.
