Europa Sculpture

Europa The myth of the Abduction of Europa, often focuses on Europa herself as a passive victim who is unwillfully ravished by the god in the form of a bull. While her destiny is an unfortunate facet of the mythology of the time, there is room—and a need— for a fresh perspective that casts her in the light of a decisive heroine within her legendary terms. I explored this shift in perspective in my own sculpture, Europa. Rather than viewing Europa as a victim who was overpowered by the misogynistic forces of mythological storytelling, my contemporary point of view is that she is an active, willing participant in her own destiny. When she flees on the bull, she does so with free will and determination. This is her opportunity to leave her home and pursue her future. In that moment of self-realization, she shows her strength of conviction, and the courage of a bold leader intent on moving forward with grace and without hesitation. Joshua Koffman
