About The Artwork

In regards to its formal attributes, I find the number five intriguing. Its arrangement contains two opposing shapes, a right angle and a curve. Yet these opposites create a sense of balance and harmony, calling to mind the Yin-Yang philosophy. This piece is an exploration of that observation. My intent was to push the formal qualities that define the number five to the edge of obscurity so the viewer could look at the piece without the inherent communicative aspect of the number interfering. I chose to work in paper and cement to further illustrate how opposing forces (soft and hard, warm and cold, fragile and strong) can work in harmony.

A kind of Humanity: I believe there is a unique quality to something made by hand. It has soul. The maker’s unique character is infused in the work. But I equally believe there is a unique connection between the maker and the owner of an art object. It is a dialog; a give and take. There is something inherently good at play in this. It is a kind of humanity, a sharing of inspiration. The maker is inspired in the work and the owner is inspired by the work. To surround one’s self with objects that inspire is a way of telling of your own story, it makes life joyful and rich. I create most of my work by hand. Wood and paper is often my material of choice, but ultimately I choose my materials based on what best suits the idea behind each piece. Working with Paper: As a graphic designer, the world of premium quality paper has been an integral part of my work. I have a deep appreciation for the art and science that goes into making such paper. The fact that it is derived from a tree and usually discarded after use is not lost on me. As a wood worker, I have a deep appreciation for trees both in nature and as a utilitarian material. Therefore, I find it hard to part with such beautifully crafted paper. After years of collecting such paper, I decided to incorporate them into my art objects. It’s a joy to giving new life and purpose to what would otherwise be discarded.
