Gargoyle Chutney Sculpture

“Gargoyle Chutney" is a coiled piece made from White St Thomas clay, which stands approximately 28cm high x 12cm in diameter. It is carved with applied gargoyles and ribbons tied in a bow, which were made separately in handmade press moulds and attached to the piece with slip. The piece has then been indented with pattern and fired to 1160 c. Coloured glaze is rubbed into the carving and wiped away, as well as being painted on to the surface area before being fired to 1080c. Coloured marbles have been dropped inside the piece before firing and they have melted and give the inside a deep crackled depth. Coloured enamels, gold lustre and mother-of-pearl have then been applied to some areas of the outside to give more definition and fired again to 800c. A final layer of paint has been added and heated to a temperature of 150c to add metallic colours. When the glazing process has been completed, a cork base and lid have been added to give the appearance of an old stone jar or bottle. Brown bootlaces have been threaded through the rim of the piece. Because I make jam and chutney with the fruit and vegetables that I grow in my garden, the creative process can sometimes feel the same as making art and it is pleasant to mingle the two together in my head. My work is a mixture of thoughts, memories, beliefs, ideals, hopes and desires which all mash together in the constant delight of making things - hence the name! This piece is presented with jam, chutney and other produce made or grown by me, and now elevated to the status of an art form as home made produce can be as rare as hens teeth! It is named, signed and dated by the artist August 2008.
