About The Artwork

I have been playing with the idea of art as a form of expression: that making a piece of art satisfies an emotional need for something to be expressed, and that art is especially useful when words fall short or cannot be used: then the visual becomes an alternative option. Much of my work has to do with the challenge of finding a way of expressing the inexpressible, and to this end, I have been thinking of what an oyster does when it is confronted with an irritant, it turns it into a pearl. I guess this is one option, but is the irritant actually processed in any way? or is it just stored? And, in terms of the oyster, creating the pearl even endangers the oyster, giving it an added value... So, this is a pearl I made, at it's centre are some words written on fabric and encased in thread and wool. I have called it a gobstopper as the concept reminds me of the sweets I used to enjoy as a child, except that at the centre of the gobstopper would be an aniseed, which tasted bitter. It's the same here, the pearl/sculpture might be beautiful, soft, warm to the touch, but at it's centre is a bitter seed. There is also the clear reference to the "gobstopper" as the sweet that stops a person from being able to talk: the word gobstopper encapsulates the essence of this sculpture: it is made to express that which cannot be expressed, and the fact that what it expresses cannot be expressed creates the gob-stopping and therefore the sculpture... This is a photograph taken of the piece, in which the reflection suggests another pearl, and the shadow a third sphere, a reminder of the many layers of understanding and perception.

I have been making things forever. Making things is how I make sense of the world. I guess everyone works in a different way, but somehow, once I start making it's like connecting with an inner voice, or my subconscious, and as I make, the meaning and inspiration which triggered the idea reveals itself to me, and often surprises me!
