About The Artwork

This work is inspired by the nostalgic and inviting symbolism that the pineapple has evoked through the centuries and how it can be reinterpreted yet equally celebrated today. There is a need to remember the beauty in our cultural influences and how we have adopted this exotic plant as a global symbol of hospitality. The work shows a spectrum of vivid colours - all inviting, contemporary and relevant.
The sculptures themselves show off the depth, intricacy and detailed technique of the pineapple that features heavily in my work, taking a highly aesthetic and stylised look at this most beautiful yet ambiguous fruit. These large box framed paper sculptures of the iconic pineapple signify our historic and cultural connection to the fruit - that of status and hospitality. In this 5 piece collection, MacGregor uses colours and materials that reflect both its humble beginnings and its rise as an icon within western society. The teals, gold’s and dark wood tones of the Baroque period, priceless cut diamond on charcoal silk fabric, and dark royal blues and greens used within traditional marbled papers.
