About The Artwork

This work was created during a residency at the Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester, NY). http://www.vsw.org/exhibition/eyes-swollen-shut-by-johnson-bowles/ "During her residency, K. Johnson Bowles explored format, size, sequencing, and display strategies for a new body of work, Eyes Swollen Shut. The series is an autobiographical exploration of trauma via a narratives. She will be exploring the nature of autobiographical works (risks, vulnerabilities, pitfalls); the phenomenological underpinnings of image juxtapositions and sequencing; methods of creating visual narratives and story-telling; and the legacies postwar photography relative to the use /relevancy/import of photographic metaphor." Biography K. Johnson Bowles has exhibited in more than 80 solo and group exhibitions nationally. Feature articles, essays, and reviews of her work have appeared in 50 publications around the country including SPOT (Houston Center for Photography), Sculpture, Fiberarts, and the Houston Post. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Fellowship and a Houston Center for Photography Fellowship. Recently, she served as a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, VA and at the Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester, NY).
