About The Artwork

I am a masculine man. I am a feminine man. I am this woman, standing on one leg, hand extended patiently, as if waiting for something that is already due. I am this vulnerability, this courage, this serenity, this nakedness, this inwardness. I am this lustful and lusted-after being. I wish I were. This work embraces qualities I project onto the feminine that I put out of my own reach. I have asked myself to inhabit the role of "the masculine" to the exclusion of "the feminine". How have I personally defined these roles? What part of them is truthful, and what part is invention? By labeling I cut off from me modes of being that I then mythologize. I become the outsider looking in, witnessing a mix of intuited truths and mirages of my own making. I am this contrived equilibrium, this thumb and heel digging into flesh, this meditative calm, this engagement of all of my muscles, this sufficiency of myself. I wish I were. Through working with a model I sublimate and examine the tension between what I am and what I have decided I cannot be. The model's interpretation of the pose with her temperament and her body makes it hers, takes it away from me. From the original sketch in ink it is entrusted to her flesh and bone, and this relinquishing leaves me with a figure in clay, a synthesis, that is not truly mine. The alienation repeats, in a way, but something else has happened which the clay also records: a collaboration, an identification with the other through many working sessions and a fragile link based on mutual trust and vulnerability. I feel exposed, and accepted. I go from knowing to questioning. I move towards becoming. --- Edition of 9 plus one artist proof (pictured). I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1981, and moved to Toronto in 2006. I studied electronics engineering and made a good career in software development, but ultimately discovered that sculpture had been at the heart of who I was my whole life. I've played with clay since I was a child, when my parents would buy me plasticine in multi-coloured packages, and I remember lumping all the colours together so that I could have a larger amount of clay to play with, and take with me everywhere I went. When I became a teenager I managed to forget this love of clay -something to do with play and adulthood being incompatible- but almost two decades later it found me once again, ready to be applied to all my grown-up concerns. The figure is my main subject. It is a building block as well as an end unto itself. I'm currently working on a series dealing with intimacy, vulnerability and sexuality, where I'm exploring the way we represent the male and the female. I hope to produce optimistic work that contributes to our reinvention of the genders and our reincorporation of the figure to contemporary sculpture.
