About The Artwork

The mask "I laughed till I was red in the face" is hand carved out of Canadian Red Cedar, hence the "red in the face"pun. Yes, the pun was intended. It was the only mask I have ever carved from Cedar owing to the difficulty in getting large pieces of suitable carving wood. This style of carving is carved "wet", meaning the wood was just forested (cut) and then then the piece is carved while the wood still retains its moisture. Only allowing the carving to dry slowly after it is done. This allows the Cedar to cue without cracking(checking) . It is finished with a gloss lacquer on the outside while left raw on the inside to allow for wood movment
