About The Artwork

Human experience stretches as far as our physical limits, it is the lens through which we experience the world. Yet technology has become an extension of our senses to interpret electric and magnetic fields, polarized light, unseen colours, micro organisms and distant planets. Our vision is an illusion, there is more in the world than what we see. The universe stretches beyond our perception. Part of the Veritas Lux Mea series, this floating artwork is fossilised in epoxy. Illusionary Lens is made using a gold mirror - also on the reverse side, with long fine wood strands in front. The bespoke stand is made of European white oak wood.

Exploring the fluid nature of life is at the heart of Natalja Heybroek's contemporary artwork. Using organic forms, her abstract art is an inquiry into human perception. It deeply questions how we perceive the world through our senses, studying the subjective experience, and how relatable life is, all at once. The autodidact artist is based in Toronto, yet has many influences of place throughout her life. Her expressive nature derives from her upbringing in the international and imaginative environment of the Findhorn Foundation Community in rural Scotland; while being raised by creative Dutch parents. And with roots in Amsterdam, art runs thick in her family history, with a poet for a father, a great uncle who is the architect Cuypers - creator of the Rijksmuseum, and her great grandparents were neighbours and friends with the Van Gogh family. Embodying strong material exploration and relationship with the natural world, the artist reveals the unusual capabilities of materials. Unexpected intrigue in the organic forms has a tendency to connect with the viewer on an experiential level. Whereas the backbone is each deliberate elemental concept on which the art is based, drawing from philosophy of the mind, human emotion and the natural sciences.
