About The Artwork

This is a sculpture made from an inherited piece of furniture, which was pared down from its original more ornate shape. I made a papier mache form which fills and pushes its way out of the attempted restriction of the drawer. This sculpture is about suppression, specifically emotional suppression, which is represented in physical form in this sculpture; it is about the inheritance of the learned behaviour of suppressing emotional responses, a trait inherited subconsciously, unlike the table which holds a physical space, is visible and tangible. Invariably, my artworks serve to express out a conflict, invariably one which I am only vaguely conscious of, and which, through the process of making, I am able to clarify, define and ultimately, release.

I have been making things forever. Making things is how I make sense of the world. I guess everyone works in a different way, but somehow, once I start making it's like connecting with an inner voice, or my subconscious, and as I make, the meaning and inspiration which triggered the idea reveals itself to me, and often surprises me!
