About The Artwork

Journeyman (noun): An apprentice who moves from one town to another, gaining an experience of different workshops. Considered an original way to learn a trade while developing character, experiencing community life and travelling. Inspired by the European tradition of Journeymen, Xenia has been travelling down the River Ouse, East Sussex, in search some of the traditional skills, crafts and materials still being practiced in Britain today. Testing various craftspeople's patience and willingness to share, Xenia turns up on their doorsteps asking for insight into their practice as a modern-day Journeywoman. So far she has visited and studied the skills of a wool-spinner, cobbler, boat builder, basket-weaver, and upholsterer and has made an object that combines and celebrates these crafts, and symbolises an on-going journey. Its a manifestation of the materials and craft methods encountered, transformed into a useful object that's also a metaphor of collaboration and learning that is alternate to our entrenched, modern systems.
