"Kasa Wa Bahari" literally "Tortoise of the Sea" in Swahili. By taking a large thrown vessel and adding multiple thrown and sculpted flippers I created a form that evokes the impression of a sentry standing guard. I admire the sea turtle's calm way of approaching and discovering the world. It is both powerful, with its hard shell armor and its mastery of the sea, and meek with its gentle eyes and soft flippers. I was able to dive with a hawksbill sea turtle in the Honduras Bay Islands. It approached me and looked directly into my eyes from 12 inches in front of my mask. I don't know what it was saying, if anything. I like to think that it knew something terrible was about to happen, but that it was telling me that I would be ok. This happened just a few months before my sister's suicide. The head of the turtle sculpture lifts off, a nod to functional ceramics, making this piece a suitable urn. Please note: the rim has cracks that happened before the clay was fired. I guarantee the structural integrity of the piece.

I am originally from Kenya. I grew up as a third culture kid on the border of Ethiopia and Somalia. My parents were missionaries who taught me the value of hard work. I grew up doing a lot of construction with concrete and metal. My love for clay as an artistic medium began at a boarding school where I learned to shape it on a pottery wheel. I am a survivor of suicide. I lost my sister to it and have attempted to kill myself with pills. I don't talk about my work without mentioning suicide and Bipolar Disorder. I would like to see the stigma surrounding mental health go away. On my part, I want to be an example to anyone suffering through depression or psychosis; you can come out the other side. You can be a sick and successful artist. The atmospheric conditions of my mind are always a factor in what I create, or whether I can create at all. Every successful piece I make is in the face of my demons. I accept my many failures and inch forward as I try to add a little more beauty to the world.
