About The Artwork

I began with a questioning of how we all relate to our rapidly changing world. In particular I have focused on how mass reproduced images of beauty and celebrity are used for social manipulation and control in our culture. Our perceptions of what is real and who we perceive ourselves to be are constantly being manipulated. I am interested in using the techniques and images used in the production of mass media’s images to enable the viewer to question these manipulations and then in turn to laugh. Initially I fragmented and repeated what we accept to be beauty, in order to reference and reflect upon the endless mass reproduced images which surround us. I began my exploration by using photographic images of Kate Moss. My choice of Kate Moss was predominately because I find her face striking and to me she is an icon for beauty and celebrity in our current time.

I am currently living and working in Sicily. My work is primarily made with Porcelain. It is silkscreen printed with fragmented and distorted images taken from mass media. Previously my work has focused upon how we are manipulated and are losing our humanity and becoming dehumanised through an over saturation of mass media and technology. We are currently worldwide undergoing an Opioid Crisis. Also the use of drugs such as Crystal Methamphetamine and legal highs is endemic. Suicides and overdoses are affecting people in every strata of society. In the US every day 130 people die from Opioid overdoses. In 2018, seventy two thousand people died in the US of drug overdoses. My recent work is about how we are out of balance with our world.
