About The Artwork

Materials: Copper, Brass, Brazillian Agate Size: 15" x 11" x 1" Kengai bonsai trees are grown such that the trunk and branches stretch down below the roots. They droop down from their pots. The curvature of line in the trunk and branches hang down at a sharp angle from the pot are the main feature in observation. Kengai style is said to be one of the oldest bonsai form. This custom design developed around this unique Brazillian agate slice I found in the east coast mineral and gem show in New Jersey this past year. It's curling patterns called out for swirling branches and leaves. The trunk was carefully hand sawn from 18 g brass sheet. Eleven copper leaf masses were hand cut from 24 gauge copper sheet. Custom brackets to hold the stone and a bracket for hanging were individually fashioned. All parts were then brazed with silver solder. After a thorough cleaning the trunk was etched and the entire piece was blackened with liver is sulfur and the blue green color was developed with Rio Grandest Green Patina solution and then fumed with ammonia. All metal was sealed with a layer is shellac and a layer of bowling alley wax.
