About The Artwork

Killer heels is a play on the phrase commonly used to describe a gorgeous pair of high heels that will impress and attract attention, sexy and powerful - but instead makes reference to the ever present awareness of women in this country for the need to protect ourselves against attack, unwanted attention, violence and rape. We have devised so many ways to keep ourselves safe, yet always feel at risk, vulnerable and on high alert. These heels depict the ultimate cliche of feminine power.

I am a painter living outside of Franschhoek, Cape Town with my sculptor husband and 2 children. My work has always been consumed with the female body and the stories and histories carried in this body. I live in an area where the trauma of our violent history can be seen in the women I encounter every day. I do not claim to be their voice - I only wish to acknowledge them and affirm that I see them.
