About The Artwork

An exact replica, at 1:1.25 scale, of the bust of Nefertiti; her neck and torso separated and re-attached so as to let the queen look over her shoulder. She is wrapped in Lapis Lazuli acrylics, gold leaf and real hydrangea. Egyptian funerary themes of rebirth through flora — such as the lotus, narcissus, and lily — are pressed into her skin, somewhat hearkening to the styles of the Amarna period. But she is, of course, an ersatz representation of all of these: The famous object, the famous queen, the priceless materials, and the agonising craftsmanship of a long-dead sculptor. This mixed media sculpture is the first piece of an ongoing collection by the artist exploring, and exerting, ownership over Nefertiti’s image. The 3D print of the bust — which is, contentiously, housed in Berlin — was executed using files made widely available by Nora Al-Badri and Jan Nikolai Nelles, who executed a data-hack “heist” to put access to the Egyptian queen’s face in the hands of the public.

Born and raised in Egypt, Rosaline has been painting almost throughout her life. She was tempted away from art school by a degree in archaeology, then by theatre. She is a full-time actor and producer. She draws inspiration from the ancient pictorial representation that she has always been fascinated and surrounded by, veering between expressionism and more rigid forms in various modes of experimentation. Her artwork has been exhibited in Egypt, and she is currently working out of New York.
