About The Artwork

This is one of a series of experimental works made with the intention of illustrating that there can be more beauty 'inside' something than the 'outside' would suggest. The depth of the work is deceptive insofar as the inside looks far deeper than it actually is, because of the intensity of the colours and the different coloured concentric rings. It was made using a slab and coils of clay. The cone shape was created using a former - a veterinary protective collar used to stop dogs from scratching at sores, etc! The work was first bisque fired to 960º. A clear glaze was then applied over the various underglazes that were used, The outside of the bowl has been glazed using a high gloss white. At the time of the second firing the bowl was placed on its side on the shelf in the kiln. This allowed for a fan shaped feature of crushed and then melted glass to be created in part of the bowl side. Whilst it can be displayed upright, it is best on its side with the melted glass being more obvious. The work was first bisque fired to 960º. For information: To make a bowl such as this will take as much as 50 hours with all the various stages the: preparation of the clay; rolling of the coils; creating the shape; bisque firing; underglazing, glazing; and second firing. In addition to the costs of labour there are other overheads including the more obvious of the clay, the glazes and the two kiln firings.

I have been a ceramicist for more than 30 years. 99% of my work is made using coils, slabs and pinch pots with the occasional use of extruded forms and aslip casting. The emphasis of my work is scupltural and ornamental rather than utlitarian. I have a particular interest in the fusing and melding of glass to ceramics and this body of work is collected from as far afield as the Middle East and USA.
