About The Artwork
As a breast cancer survivor and fashion designer, I strive to portray the dichotomy of society's image of the feminine body with the gross distortion that breast cancer causes, both physically and mentally. The wooden breast, made from preserved cottonwood, is both beautiful and distorted. UGLY BEAUTIFUL describes my work, undulation vs. distortion, soft movement of the body vs. the mix of textures of wood and the mosaic of vintage and contemporary seed beading.

Lynne Hanson’s subject matter is often very personal, and is frequently inspired by memories of growing up in the horse country of Maryland, her career as a clothing/textile designer and her struggles with breast cancer and body image. Her current works approach these themes using wood, fiber, wax, and vintage beads, resulting in forms that simultaneously suggest pixilation and nature.
