This large scale sculpture is a magnificent depiction of Lord Ganesh by artist R. Mani. The delicate carvings illuminate his figure creating a descriptive contrast against the black granite. Ganesh stands proudly on the surface of an expanded lotus, the mice run in circles beneath him symbolising the chaos that he so diligently has risen above. His two lower arms hang down with relaxed confidence as they attain an axe in the left arm and japamala prayer beads dangling from the right. Centred in the middle a hand balances Ganesh’s sweet dessert; Modak, as a reward for sadhana. The right hand raised up in the abhaya mudra symbolises fearlessness and protection. The last two arms lifted in the air hold a noose used by Ganesh to capture difficulties. With the final hand firmly gripping a goad which is traditionally used by mahoats to direct elephants. This holds symbolic importance to the direction of the soul, to not steer towards a negative direction but to stay on a focused path. Swiftly tightening around his large protruding belly is a snake belt. His belly represents the entire cosmos which is held together by the cosmic energy of the snake Kundalini. ABOUT GANESH Lord Ganesh is a son of Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati. Clearly distinguished by his elephant head, Ganesh is a symbol of perseverance, protection, well-being, health, and prosperity. In India, Lord Ganesh is followed by every religion as a welcoming gesture or an introductory deity to start a new chapter in life (job, new house, wedding, etc.). Symbolically, the rat, which is his vahan or vehicle, is a representation of chaos, while a bloated tummy depicts accepting all inhibitions and negativities. Truly, Lord Ganesh brings joys and unlimited bliss to our lives.
