About The Artwork

The majority of goods that are made in China are not aspirational; they are cheap, imperfect or copies. Porcelain is the exception to this rule. Since the Sung dynasty China has been creating ceramic ware in Jingdezhen that is the envy of the world. Makers in 17th Century Europe desperately tried to emulate its whiteness, strength and translucency but with little success. When I visited Jingdezen this year I was bitten by the insatiable desire to craft perfect white, translucent porcelain. For the first time I wished my work could be made in China. Made by a Gweipo in Hong Kong is a porcelain vessel that has been made with the throwing and decorating techniques I learnt in Jingdezen. The word is painted in Qing Fa, Chinese Blue and White painting, and finished in part with gold lustre explore my relationship to making ceramic ware as a Westerner living in Hong Kong. My desire to return to China is explored along with my struggle to find a way to emulate the translucency that was so easily acheivable in a city built around the production of this material. My creations have become the fake goods, I have become the imitator and the imposter and long to reengage directly with the makers who spend their days working in the home of porcelain.
