About The Artwork

On July 22nd 2011 I inspected this tree at Botanical Garden, Tøyen (Oslo) which had been felled for safety reasons. I had been invited to consider how to turn the remaining stump and log into an art project. The tree was planted in 1927 and was known as “Moe’s Willow”. How would I transform it, so that “Moe’s Willow” could have a continued life as an artistic expression in the Botanical Garden? During this first visit, I heard a loud bang. This turned out to be a bomb exploding at the government buildings downtown Oslo – the beginning of the terrible events for which this date will always be remembered in Norway. The impression of the large tree lying on the ground, while the news of the terror unfolded, has influenced the expression of my sculpture. A woman’s head appears from the trunk. She lives in the tree, dreamily watching the log on the ground. I have named her Madonna, inspired by Edvard Munch’s famous painting. In the horizontal log, I have tried to recreate what she sees and must relate to. Associations interact and it is up to the spectator to interpret the meaning of the relationship between the woman in the tree and what she is facing. Around her, the willow is still generating new, green shoots.

I am a Norwegian artist working with drawings and sculpture in several different materials: wood, steel, concrete, iron and stone. I have been represented at numerous exhibitions in Norway and abroad, including six times at the National Autumn Exhibition in Oslo. A number of my sculptures consist of groups of two or three objects where the movement / energy / space between them creates a tension. In my solo exhibition "Shadows" (Tegnerforbundet, Oslo 2008), I explored formal issues of light and space in both drawings and sculptures. All my works in wood are composed using a special technique; by joining pieces of wood in different sizes and then shaping them with a chainsaw. I build the shapes by adding and subtracting in a repetitive pattern. The chainsaw serves as a powerful pencil to accentuate or correct lines and shapes. See for example ”Wolves” and “Angels”. Other techniques are used in my "Horse and Rider" series based on Uccellos battle scenes. I isolate the characters from the battle scenes, drawing them one by one in a backlight situation. My focus is on the play of light and darkness. I develop patterns of light that contrast various figurations resulting in a virtual surprise attack on the observer.
