About The Artwork

MAFIA HANDS are handmade forgiveness charms. They are created in batches and are numbered and signed. I only make 33 pieces of each item; hand sewn, printed and embroidered, so each one of them is unique. MAFIA HANDS are part of a bigger project called MAFIA that includes hands, fingers and feet. They are soft sculptures inspired by the mafia ritual of chopping off the fingers and hands of those who make mistakes. But why are we sometimes our own mafia? Why do we keep on punishing ourselves for mistakes, instead of showing a little bit of compassion? Why can’t we forgive ourselves the same way we would forgive a friend? MAFIA HANDS are a reminder that we should always forgive ourselves and others; they are magic charms that bring us the power and confidence we need to allow ourselves to admit mistakes and forgive.

I am a Uruguayan artist, designer and artisan currently living in Nuuk, Greenland. I grew up with a curious, restless and observant spirit in a home where the materials and the time to explore and create were always within reach. Being formally trained in fashion and textile design has clearly influenced my approach to art and throughout years of experimenting on different creative fields, I see my work as a compilation of objects that tell my story as a human in this world. I believe in the healing qualities of art and in the meaning hidden within objects. Inspired by daily emotions and intimate realities, making things has always been my path to self-discovery, my tool to understanding the world I live in and my favourite game. I like to think that the objects I make have certain “magic powers”, and I define my art as an eternal game of symbols that navigates between the conscious and the unconscious, the ordinary and the magical, what is and what is not.
