An average person eats around 45 kg of meat per year. Producing 1 kg of meat takes around 7 kg of feed, 15.000 liters of water and 50-70 m2 of land. For this project I re-use expired meat from supermarkets. Not as a reaction against the consumption of meat or as an aim to turn everybody into a vegetarian. But it is a reaction against waste and more specific the waste of food, taking in account the amount of resources needed for the production. By treating the expired pieces of meat in a laboratory, they get decellularized. It’s the same technique that is being used in the latest research of tissue regeneration and organ transplants. By applying the technique the meat loses all its cellular-content, turns transparent white and gets the look of lace or marble. I reduce the expired meat from food to nothing more than a material, which can be shaped and dried. The result is a series of objects made out of this material that resembles marble: meat marble.
