My Mermaid sculpture is a part of my diploma work named Once Upon a Time. In this project, I focused on reinterpreting gender roles and stereotypes using children’s literary sources, and playfully reflected negative social conventions with my distinctive sculptural voice. My mermaid sculpture is inspired by the classic fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid”, by Hans Christian Andersen from 1836 and belong to the same large series of sculptures like my other artwork submissions. “The Little Mermaid” in particular teaches us that it is ok to give up your entire identity and voice in order to gain a partner. My mermaid figure is straightforwardly cutting off her tail with a metal saw. That might be a more gory transformation than the one done by the mermaid in the fairy tale, but the result is the same. I was hoping that the ridiculousness of her sacrifice would be more clearly visible like this to the viewer. Nobody should be taught to sacrifice either their voice or who they are.

Czech Republic
Nikola Emma always dwelt on a variety of creative expressions, making artwork a clear choice for her. From the study of ceramics to the design of wooden toys, she went to study sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, a field in which she feels she could finally fully realize herself. Her body of work is full of surreal often anthropomorphic figures, sometimes grotesque, emotional and other times macabre. Creation often stems from literature, her inner world, and from her amateur interest in psychoanalysis. Relationships, intimacy, and the effort to capture what's happening within a person are the topics Nikola Emma is working with over the past few years. Artwork often has a therapeutic form in her case. She has exhibited in various places in the Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Belgium, and Australia.
