Artist’s book Maria Patino Moment Encounter, 2018 Total book pages: 11 Mixed media on wood and paper I create one of a kind rare handbound-books and altered books from discarded hardbound books, discarded fabrics, recycled materials, found objects, and much more. Each book has a different poetic narrative, reflection, nourishment, unpredictable images, textures, and forms juxtaposed with paper collages, drawings and paintings, found objects, and ephemera to become a syncretic artist book. I draw, paint, and collage images and treat each book as a sketchbook, a visual diary. This book took me about six months to finish it. Each page is unique, rare, one of a kind. My artwork is intuitive, guided by illusions, narratives, and references. I'm interested in the aesthetic of color, texture, and form and its potential to communicate universal messages of the past and present. My work is an ongoing investigation of human relationships, nature, and the abstract reality of time. Artists like Joseph Cornell, Bettye Saar, Nick Bantock are some of my inspiration for my work. Other artists that maintained a sketchbook over the years to record their experiences, thoughts, and observations like Leonardo Davinci, Jean Michel Basquiat, Frida Khalo to name a few. My artists' books are collected by private collectors and Universities

Maria works intuitively, guided by memories and imagination; her preferred techniques are mixed media and paper collage. She is interested in the aesthetic of color, texture and form and its potential to communicate universal messages of the past and present. Scraps from old books, old photographs, and other discarded ephemera become elements of her artwork, merging through layers of colors and textures to create a new story about identity, community and nostalgic reflection of the past. Maria was born in El Cairo Valle, a remote village located in the Andes mountains in Colombia. She has lived in New York and Texas. Maria has a BFA from SVA, School of Visual Arts in New York, where she studied graphic design. She is a mixed media artist and works from her art studio located in The Bird Road Art District in Miami, Florida.
