About The Artwork
This was Lourdes Torgersen's first recycled sculpture! To reach this spectacular result, she used various found glass jars, hand painted, slumped them. The idea started when she realized many glass containers are used everyday and end up in landfills. She then decides to hand paint them, place them in the kiln and fire from 1250-1500 degrees to melt. The inclination to flow freely, the capacity to freeze a moment in time, and the ability to manipulate optics are all properties of the glass shown on this piece. Depending on the direction the glass jars melted they were combined, leading to an expression that becomes her narrative. The final sculpture presents us with flowing glass that whorl and overflow from one part to the next.

I’ve been creating things since I’m a young child. I enjoyed spending time sewing, re-using scraps and left over materials from everywhere to develop new projects. In my family, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I was presented with lots of possibilities. My mother was an art teacher and I watched her doing things all the time. My Grandma, who also lived with us, was a seamstress with incredible amounts of scraps of fabrics. My father was a writer, professor, oil painter and gallery owner.
