Oppress Sculpture

Taylor's work currently revolves around the paradox of expressing and exposing personal emotion, yet concealing information from the viewer simultaneously as a type of escapism from her own reality. As the artist, she wants to communicate the inaccessibility of her personal experiences to the viewer and antithetically create an ambiguous familiarity felt by the audience, even though the figures pictured remain anonymous. She states - "In "˜Dissemble' I have focused on particular figures that have influenced and reflected upon my life negatively; presenting them in a deformed arrangement to convey the aggression and frustration I feel towards them and to also remain elusive about their identities and the experiences I shared with them." Concealing their identities in such a way allures to the concept of dehumanisation, where they almost become monstrous, fantastical creatures. The title itself exposes Taylor's intention of concealment, as it can be defined by the act of disguising or hiding behind a false appearance. Her use of tonal in the work offers an honest and intimate form which juxtaposes the complex themes within her work. Beth Taylor's work can be considered as a therapeutic gain of control, a revengeful act made from experiences where she, in fact, felt out of control.
