About The Artwork

The black 'particles' are on a pleated black and white laser print. There is no actual colour in the piece. However, colours are seen—they are created by diffraction of the light that shines through from the LED panel behind. Ghost-like secondary images of the particles lift off the printed surface to apparently overlay each other in subtle, soft hues of blues and oranges creating patterns that shift as the viewer moves position. These colours and patterns are made by the nature of light itself. Mirrors suggest that the work extends beyond its own boundaries towards infinity. This piece is inspired by my PhD research. I explore the phenomena of light and matter, specifically investigating ideas of wave/particle duality. I am inspired by physicists Louis de Broglie and David Bohm who posed that, at the quantum level, matter exists as both particles and waves. In 'Meeting the Universe Halfway: quantum physics and the entanglement of matter and meaning' theorist, Karen Barad, compares qualities of reflection and diffraction to differentiate the notions of classical and quantum physics. Both branches of physics are at odds with each other and Bohm sought to reconcile both viewpoints. I use materials that reflect and diffract to bridge the opposing positions. Both reflection and diffraction inhabit the same artwork. Waves and particles are a recurring motif and are referenced in this series. The artwork is housed in a black wooden box frame. It has a proprietary LED light panel with a dimmable LED driver and switch (115-240 V ac). Flat panel wall fixings are included.
