About The Artwork

I developed this work throughout the pandemic and presidential elections in the US. I realized how for the first time I became extremely aware about what and how I was breathing, what information I read in the news and how I expressed myself on social media. Being inside of home, this was a time that felt like a continuous and repetitive cycle, it became difficult to differentiate one day of the other. I thought about this awareness of the quality of input and output in my body through my respiration, my blinking and swallowing and afterwards I decided to document those three actions: Times you blink, times you swallow while in silence and times you breathe , per minute. Blinking, Breathing, Swallowing. This piece was acquired during The Other Art Fair Chicago event in 2021.

Paola Gracida was born in 1979 in Mexico City, she studied Industrial design in Mexico city and made in Master in Fine Arts in Sweden. She currently lives and works in Saint Joseph, Michigan, USA. Her work explores the idea of adaptability and how we exist under continual change. It aims to express a transitory nature by using shapes that are in a fragile balance, an interior or core. Each work is a quest to defy the force of gravity, shapes that are challenging to build in clay. Focused on how the material changes throughout the process imagining how they will overcome these stages against gravity without breaking. Her practice is based on creating pieces with an essence that can be redefined by others, that convey contrast and openness to understand how it would be possible to modify cultural references and show we transcend stereotypes to become only human.
