About The Artwork

The works in this series consider ideas around belonging and a sense of place, using the symbols of the elements to describe our connection to the natural, physical world. Map-like abstract imagery helps to suggest the idea of navigation to its audience. Traditional methods such as acid etching and hand marbling allude to belonging from a historical context; they consider a sense of belonging that takes place from cultural heritage. Polychromatic Flare II is inspired by the connection Plato made between the Platonic solids and the elements of nature suggesting that the tetrahedron connected with fire, the octahedron with air, the cube with earth, the icosahedron with water and the dodecahedron with aether. The pieces uses triangles of prints and papers folded to give the appearance of a tetrahedron. The subtle colour changes are used to create the association with fire and flames the first instance but the piece also draws inspiration from changing tonal blends that can be seen in the natural world in skies and waters. These pieces are created from collected off-cuts of other works and therefore contain a huge range of different printed and marbled papers. The avoidance of waste in the work helps to highlight an environmental message through the piece whilst considering our connection to the natural world.

Louisa Boyd graduated in 2001, showing a series of paper sculptures that used bookbinding techniques to support their structures. These artist’s books gained recognition with awards at this early stage in her career. Boyd has since worked as an artist exhibiting both nationally and internationally. Her work has been incorporated into a number of publications and also included in both national and international public collections with pieces held at King St Stephen Museum, Hungary, Baylor University, Texas, USA, The Grosvenor Museum, Chester, UK and Bank Street Arts, Sheffield, UK. Recent successes have seen her gain further recognition through exhibitions selected by prestigious juried panels and showing her work alongside some of the most well-established and respected names in contemporary art. Shortlisted for the John Ruskin prize in 2017 and having been selected for exhibition on three occasions for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, Boyd continues to make paintings, prints, artist’s books and paper sculptures. Her pieces honour traditional techniques such as hand marbling and acid etching yet innovate in the application of these skills. She uses abstract mark making and an explorative and inventive approach to realise new pieces which often have three-dimensional qualities.
