About The Artwork

Inspired by news reports that suggest we stay in our homes and practise good hygiene. The idea of our homes as a safe bubble, but is the virus simply hovering outside the perimeter waiting to strike. This work continues my experiments into the relationship between paint and canvas. Layers of paint hug the canvas chaotically providing contrast to the pristine white square questioning what we expect to see in a painting. This work is fitted with D rings and wire for immediate hanging. On the back you will find my signature, initials, title and year. It is registered on the NRAA (National Registry for Australian artists) .The work comes with details of the registration and a Certificate of Authenticity. HE SCULPTURAL COLLECTION   My process involves the exclusive use of dried rather than wet paint. I exploit the inherent flexibility in this material to cut, fragment, weave and layer. The result of this method is that with each artwork created there are inevitable leftovers that build up in the studio.   This series is a response to what would otherwise be discarded. All works in this series are highly dimensional and uniquely sculptural. Paintings that quite literally exist on their own without the need for canvas.

Artist Statement “When the paint is dry my work is just beginning”. The thought that paint could be capable of independence from the canvas has been the driving force behind Julee’s art practice. It led to her process of creating paintings on plastic waiting for the paint to dry before she removes it. The unsupported material has an inherent flexibility that allows Julee to investigate her interest in textile, collage, and sculptural techniques. Through cutting, layering, moulding, weaving, and gluing, each creation is the result of many hours of meticulous and detailed work. An artist since childhood, Julee holds a BFA (Sculpture and Painting) from Curtin University, Perth. She is also the author of the book Sculptural Secrets for Mosaic (Schiffer Publishing Ltd, USA). Her works can be found in collections, both public and private, worldwide.
