1955; Tacoma, Washington, USA Raised in Hawaii, I now live and work in New York City. I am a sculptor and a member of the collective, Field Trip, with musician, Larry Dunn, and artist, Andy Monk. My work deals with the transformation of objects and the transformative power of ideas to shape our view of the world and how we experience it. Conceptually, my fascination with myth and science - the tales we tell ourselves to explain our world - is the common thread. It intertwines our desire to control our fear and to feed our curiosity of the unknown. I like to tweak that, both the fear and the logic. Basically, any piece begins with a fascination with an object, though I cannot tell you what made me think that working with 12,000+ porcupine quills was a good idea. Or broken glass. Or crocheting with 8,000 feet of nylon rope, but it was what moved me from working 2-dimensionally into the world of sculpture. I also love working within structures: it gives me something to push against. Some of the greatest poems were written in haiku and sonnet forms, which can be seen as the most restrictive, but I like making rules and breaking rules. It stimulates me to play harder, so my work is very controlled, but it is also about being out of control.
