India - a medley of infinite millionaires, billionaires and scores of ignored inhabitants. A place where excesses of Wealth, Dominance and Avarice are cohorts of the rich and Anguish, Desolation, and Obscurity journey with the poor. A bright red cycle rickshaw. To the fore, a man pulling the rickshaw, suffering and bent under the strain of a poverty stricken life. His body covered with tiny pictures of Gods and Goddesses. His unshakable faith and belief in his Karma* is the only escape from a life of scarcity and deprivation. The second man, inactive in the passenger seat of the cycle rickshaw glowing in gold. His hands overflowing with money. The rising gap between abject poverty and obscene wealth is played out daily in every town, city and village of our country. The unique part is that each person thinks it’s their fate or karma* and that they are destined to live the life they've been born into. For how long will they continue to passively resign themselves to their faith and fate?

Artist statement My work finds its verse in memories. Memories of my days at my grandmothers tea estate, nestled between the mountains in a tiny village called Darang, in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, a state in Northern India. It is my spiritual home today that renders my aesthetic. Life has taken me to many countries where I have lived and worked but I’ve always felt like something was amiss, I have always longed for the hills and it’s taken me a lifetime to realise that my childhood home never left me. The feeling of being there are my deepest roots that I call home. It is a land that I have loved completely and thoroughly. Although some of the people who brought me into that love are no longer present, the feeling of love remains, their energy remains and their teachings remain. In a sense I want to capture that giving, that love, that feeling of contentment, of plenty, of peace and harmony. The sunshine and the rain, the winds and the storms, the peace but above all the solitude. Once you understand that, you understand everything. It is where I go in moments of incredible joy and extreme sadness. I’ve carried it with me all over the world, it is what defines me. No matter what successes or failures that is something I always have within me. The most important thing I took away from my wandering days in the hills was freedom. Freedom from dogma and religion, freedom from close mindedness, freedom not to care for what was expected of me, freedom not to get influenced by anyone, freedom to not adhere to rules and freedom not to need to belong or fit in. I don’t believe as a creative person you have a single expressionist style through the life of your practice .You have to evolve and learn, understand the reflection of ones work. Layers of surfaces give meaning to the depth of understanding and emotion below. Nothing is ever in vacuum and nothing is ever lost. Even if it can no longer be seen, It is right there under the surface. My works are made up of these layers. Sometimes many layers that you only catch a glimpse of how the work had started and how it has evolved. The process is what is important for me. No painting is ever finished, like nature is never finished. It grows and collapses and gives of itself time and time again. Every time you look to a landscape you may think nothing has changed and yet...
