Mark Billy’s “Don’t Touch Mark Billy” is a life-size cast of his own penis in pink resin. Incorporated into the art piece are the artist’s beard trimmings, which enhance the realism of the piece. The trimmings that were in the piece that went missing were from the day the artist proposed to his wife. Reminiscent of ancient Greek Sculptures, Jasper Johns and others his piece uses the phallic as an art symbol. Unlike his predecessors, his process focuses purely on the phallic image versus the overall sculpture of the human form. Mark Billy concentrates on the most important part of the ancient sculpture – what is often missing or hidden. While other artists incorporate the penis into their pieces, Billy chose to remove everything from his artwork – but the penis.
