About The Artwork

Photography, digital collage and painting with color algorithms are printed on chromogenic transparency, backlit with television screen looping a custom animation sequence designed by artist and produced by Brian McGaw. The animation features white light against gray that appears to directionally move, descend and echo the highlights and shadows lighting the transparency. These movements illustrate the original musical score by Andre Mistier; set in bespoke frame of wood and black mirrored aluminum sheeting. The female voice has always been profound and life changing and making whether or not it is valued or registered. Shortly preceding the MeToo movement, a zeitgeist change was already emerging toward female declaration and honesty around sexism. This image features my lifetime best friend and fellow female athlete taken from a photo session of intimate, energetic body work wearing gold metallic paint. She is strong, she is golden, she is beautiful and she is infinite, just the inspiration I so needed then and also now. The roar felt in her posture inspired a collage with a photograph taken over the west end of the Grand Canon in Arizona of the Milky Way, far away from interference or much contrived light. The call felt in this image demanded to be further experienced and heard. I created an audio-visual approach to mobilize and synchronize the lighting behind the transparency along original music. The music was written in collaboration with Andre Mistier. I asked him to close his eyes as I described walking at varied paces through a meditative, made up place with colors and textures and elements that I felt described the intended mood for the piece. The story exercise was not prescript. He composed the track like a narrative journey through that space. Emanating from sound and light, she is heard throughout the stars as every soul should be.

Allison Harrell is a contemporary artist and photographer exploring human imperatives, cultural inspiration and combinations of mediums. American born in 1983, she was raised by mother, educator Gwendolyn Harrell in Knoxville, TN. With focus in dark room photography and sculpture, she pursued scientific and premedical topics and competitive athletic participation, all of which continue to influence her subject matter. She completed a BA in 2005 from Maryville College, TN. Preceding graduate studies in San Francisco, she enrolled in a therapy program for eating disordered women in Florida. Distance from childhood influences helped consecrate a lifelong practice of therapy and psychological fitness and contributes to ongoing themes of reflection, healing and social accountability. At Academy of Art University, she created stylized portraits of similarly aged females including vintage, recycled garments as alternative self portraiture. Sh furthered her painting practice in oils influenced by Impressionists, Post Impressionists and Fauvists.   She continues to employ herself as a test subject for insights of healing and personal activism. Following completion of her MFA in Photography in 2010, she began work on fine and commercial art projects in New York City. Her 2017 debut solo exhibition in New York SoHo gallery Ward Nasse and 2018 MVVO AD ART Show at Sotheby's, NY led to subsequent exhibitions in New York, Paris, Unite Kingdom, Austria, Monaco, Spain and Italy. She lives in New York with husband Andre and son Andre James Mistier. They founded Gather, an alternative art space.
