About The Artwork
Self Preservation was inspired by the coral caves of Aruba. Once filled with crystals, the caves are protected by gates at night and monitored by day to prevent theft. Visitors can temporarily view the remaining crystals and coral formations, as they are unique to Aruba and not found anywhere else in the Caribbean. Tyra was inspired by the concept of protecting uniqueness while still allowing for interaction with the outside world. She wanted to physically depict protecting what makes someone special, while allowing those same characteristics to be on display for interaction with others.

Tyra Johnson is a self taught multi-disciplinary artist. She began her artistic journey with mixed media painting and developed a passion for sculpture, interior design, and architecture. In 2019, she chose to focus her efforts on sculpture and architecture. Tyra minimizes color and overall materials to lessen the environmental impact of her work. She is most fulfilled and inspired when spending time in nature. The geography and topography of her travels as a military child and later into adulthood heavily influence her work. She explores fixed ideals of human existence expressed through natural forms to challenge ingrained perspectives.
